Enrich Your Vocabulary

If you are a novice in the field of technical drawing, there are words that may not be clear to you. It may be the first time you have heard of CAD or isometric. Don’t worry. We gathered the common terms used in relation with technical drawing. Browse through the page and learn the basics.

Technical Drawing

It pertains to any illustration that leans toward the technical aspect of an object.

Drafting

This is the general term used to point out any kind of graphic representation.

Drafting Technology

This refers to the drafting techniques and tools practiced by drafters, designers, and engineers in order to turn ideas into technical drawings.

Technical Sketching

This refers to the freehand drawing where a drafter only uses two tools, a paper and a pencil, to express the technical shape of an idea.

Mechanical Drawing

This is a technical drawing created with the aid of drafting instruments.

Engineering Drawing

This is under the umbrella of mechanical drawing. It is a drawing used by engineers and other members of the design team to communicate the technical aspect of an object including, but not limited to, shape and size as well as the materials that would be utilized in the production.

Engineering Graphic

This is a graphic representation or a mechanical drawing of physical objects common in the field of engineering and science.

Descriptive Geometry

This is the method practiced by engineers to arrive at a solution for graphical and special problems. This technique uses accurate geometric depictions.

Computer-aided Design and Drafting

It is also known as CADD. It is an interactive design tool launched to create design ideas and technical drawings through computer software and hardware.

T-square

It is an instrument in drafting which consists of a head and a blade used by drafters to create horizontal lines. It is built to fit the drafting board. Typically, it forms a 90-degree angle but there are available templates that can be used to form other angles such as 15, 30, 45, 60, or 75.

Compass

This is a drafting instrument intended to aid drafters to form the perfect circle or arc. It is adjustable so designers can create circles in the desired radii.

Oblique

It is a three-dimensional drawing where the object’s depth is represented at several angles.

Isometric

It is another three-dimensional drawing where the width and the depth of the object are shown at a 30-degree angle while the height is shown at a 90-degree angle.

Three View Drafting

It is a set of three two-dimensional drawings. The three views include the front side, top side, and one of the sides. Drafters commonly use the right side of the object in their three view drawings.
